County staff take on March of the Day walk for MND charities

10 mins

Two Stockport County staff members are set to take on a three-day walk from Liverpool to Edgeley Park to raise vital funds for the Darby Rimmer Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Foundation and Leeds Hospital Foundation.

Mike Petch, Club Photographer at County, will complete the challenge for the first time alongside Katie Myott, Inclusion Officer at Stockport County Community Trust. Katie previously walked 150 miles across West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester in 2025 as part of the March of the Day campaign.

The March of the Day sponsored walk was launched in 2024 by the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation, founded by former professional footballer, Stephen Darby, who lives with Motor Neurone Disease, and his close friend Chris Rimmer, a British Forces veteran who lived with MND before his passing.

March of the Day III will cover an incredible 340 miles over six days, taking in 45 football and rugby grounds, including Edgeley Park. The walk begins at Anfield, where Stephen Darby started his football career, and finishes at the Rob Burrow Centre for MND in Leeds. Mike and Katie will complete phase one of the walk between Liverpool and Stockport.

More than 100 former football and rugby players are set to take part in this year’s event, including former Stockport County players Rickie Lambert and Stuart Barlow.

During Stockport County’s fixture against Wigan Athletic on Saturday 21st February, the Community Trust hosted a bucket collection to raise vital funds for the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation.

March of the Day III takes place from 1–6 June 2026, and we’re encouraging people to join the walk from Altrincham to Stockport.

Katie Myott, Inclusion Officer at Stockport County Community Trust said:

“Taking part in March of the Day again means a huge amount to me. Seeing the impact this walk has, not just in raising funds but in bringing people together around such an important cause, is incredibly powerful."

“Motor Neurone Disease affects so many families, and being able to play a small part in supporting the work of the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation and Leeds Hospitals Foundation is something I’m really proud of.”

Mike Petch, Club Photographer at Stockport County said:

“This will be my first time taking on March of the Day, and it’s an honour to be involved. As a football club, we see first-hand how much this challenge and these charities mean to people."

“Walking from Liverpool to Edgeley Park for such a vital cause is something I’m really looking forward to, even if it’s going to be tough.”
